This book offers a comprehensive review of essential medical knowledge topics that pain fellows need to acquire to successfully graduate a Pain Medicine Fellowship Program. It enhances local curriculum in pain fellowships across the nation and offers standardized education of trainees while also serving as a reference for practitioners and trainees worldwide. The book serves several purposes: Guides and standardizes teaching curriculum for the 120 ACGME accredited pain fellowships and about 200+ non-ACGME accredited fellowships Offers trainees key references essential for their education and future career development Serves as board preparation material Guides pain program directors on developing a program-specific and fellow-specific curriculum tailored towards own institution Chapters follow a natural progression from basic science to topics on interventions, surgeries and emerging techniques in pain medicine. The reader is guided and directed towards concepts needed for progressing into becoming competent pain physicians. Together with introduction of essential topics in pain medicine, each chapter is introducing key publications that are requisite in learning the art and...

Immunity to Human Fungal Pathogens: Mechanisms of Host Recognition, Protection, Pathology, and Fungal Interference

Immunity to Human Fungal Pathogens: Mechanisms of Host Recognition, Protection, Pathology, and Fungal Interference

Autor: Steven P. Templeton , Amariliz Rivera , Bernard Hube , Ilse D. Jacobsen

Número de Páginas: 440

Fungi are found in virtually every environment, and comprise a significant portion of the normal microflora of healthy individuals. Some species of fungi are aeroallergen sources capable of inducing sensitization and causing exacerbation of asthma and respiratory allergy. Others are transmissible between hosts and may cause no symptoms in healthy individuals. However, immune suppressed individuals may develop invasive disease marked by tissue invasion with a potential for widespread dissemination. Existing therapies for patients consist of antifungal drugs, yet these require prolonged administration with the possibility of adverse side effects, and may be rendered ineffective by the emergence of antifungal-resistant strains. It is therefore of interest to increase our understanding of host-pathogen interactions in order to facilitate the development of new therapies for individuals suffering from fungal infection and disease. These early interactions are shaped by an array of constituent and secreted factors that stimulate or inhibit host immune responses toward protective or detrimental immunity. Likewise, an array of preformed factors and tissue-resident cells provide early...

Mitochondrial Diseases

Mitochondrial Diseases

Número de Páginas: 304

Mitochondrial Diseases, Volume 194 presents the most common clinical manifestations, providing an up-to-date summaries on the clinical presentations, diagnostic processes, genetic counseling and treatment options in mitochondrial diseases. Contents include specialist biochemical analyses and targeted molecular genetic testing, as well as first-line genome-wide sequencing to accelerate speed of diagnosis while avoiding time-consuming, expensive and invasive investigations. Establishing a genetic diagnosis allows patients with mitochondrial diseases to have reproductive options, all of which are covered within. This book is intended for neurologists to help them recognize and manage patients with mitochondrial diseases. - Examines the pathophysiology of mitochondrial diseases and disorders - Focuses on neurological symptoms of mitochondrial diseases - Presents myopathies, neuropathies, epilepsy, ataxia, paraplegias, and more - Covers histology, metabolism, genetic, and neuroimaging diagnostics - Summarizes both available and emerging therapies - Includes clinical trials, the use of biomarkers and reproductive options

Physician's Guide to the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Follow-Up of Inherited Metabolic Diseases

Physician's Guide to the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Follow-Up of Inherited Metabolic Diseases

Autor: Nenad Blau , Carlo Dionisi Vici , Carlos R. Ferreira , Christine Vianey-saban , Clara D. M. Van Karnebeek

Número de Páginas: 1514

This updated and enlarged second edition is a unique source of information on the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of metabolic diseases. The clinical and laboratory data characteristic of rare metabolic conditions can be bewildering for clinicians and laboratory personnel alike – reference laboratory data is scattered, and clinical descriptions can be obscure. The new Physician’s Guide with the additional more than 600 diseases now featured, documents 1200 conditions grouped according to type of disorder, organ system affected (e.g. liver, kidney, etc) or phenotype (e.g. neurological, hepatic, etc). It includes relevant clinical findings and highlights the pathological values for diagnostic metabolites. Guidance on appropriate biochemical genetic testing is also provided and established experimental therapeutic protocols are described, with recommendations on follow-up and monitoring. The authors are acknowledged experts, and the book is a valuable desk reference for all who deal with inherited metabolic diseases. Inborn Metabolic Diseases

Inborn Metabolic Diseases

Autor: Jean-marie Saudubray , Matthias R. Baumgartner , Ángeles García-cazorla , John Walter

Número de Páginas: 906

This 7th edition is a milestone in the series of Inborn Metabolic Diseases (IMD), recognised as the standard textbook for professionals involved in the diagnosis and management of IMD. Within the last 5 years a Copernican revolution in our understanding of IMD has changed the definition, concepts, paradigms, and classification. This new edition now extends the concept of IMD to include those disturbances in molecular machinery diagnosed by molecular techniques but currently without measurable metabolic markers. The book presents a clinical and biochemical approach to the diagnosis and management of IEM with many diagnostic algorithms for patients of all ages and with a particular focus on neurological presentations. It includes separate, comprehensive sections on IEM classified in 3 major pathophysiological categories: disorders of energy metabolism, both mitochondrial and non-mitochondrial; small molecule disorders, mostly diagnosed with metabolic markers; and complex molecules disorders, mostly diagnosed with molecular techniques. Two new chapters were added, describing around 600 disorders of nucleic acid metabolism, tRNA metabolism, ribosomal biogenesis, and cellular...
