Clonación y caracterización funcional de genes implicados en la acumulación de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados en aceites de semillas

Clonación y caracterización funcional de genes implicados en la acumulación de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados en aceites de semillas

Autor: Miguel Angel Vilches Ferron

Arachidonate Remodeling and Inflammation

Arachidonate Remodeling and Inflammation

Autor: Alfred N. Fonteh , Robert L. Wykle

Número de Páginas: 248

Arachidonic acid (AA) and other 20 or 22-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are precursors of lipid mediators of inflammation known as eicosanoids. These mediators are critical in disease processes and in regulating normal cell function. Remodeling is important in maintaining homeostasis and in regulating cell function by dictating how PUFAs are converted to lipid mediators of inflammation. Thus, PUFA remodeling is a critical process in the biosynthesis of a multitude of mediators, and understanding this process will unravel better therapeutic targets for controlling inflammatory diseases such as asthma and Alzheimer’s disease. AA metabolism is described in an integrated context linking the remodeling processes with the biosynthesis of mediators and diseases. By following the movement of the substrate (AA), the volume describes how upstream biosynthetic pathways influence the formation of lipid mediators of inflammation, showing the metabolic interrelationship between all AA-derived mediators.

Biotransformation of Waste Biomass into High Value Biochemicals

Biotransformation of Waste Biomass into High Value Biochemicals

Autor: Satinder Kaur Brar , Gurpreet Singh Dhillon , Carlos Ricardo Soccol

Número de Páginas: 500

Agro-industrial wastes are end-products emerging after industrial processing operations and also from their treatment and disposal e.g. solid fruit wastes and sludge. The agro-industrial wastes are often present in multiphase and comprise multicomponent. Nevertheless, these wastes are a goldmine as they possess valuable organic matter which can be diverted towards high value products ranging from polymers to antibiotics to platform chemicals. There have been plenty of books published on bioenergy, enzymes and organic acids, among others. However, this emerging field of biochemical has not yet been covered so far which is an important entity of the biorefinery model from waste biomass and needs to be understood from fundamental, applied as well as commercial perspective which has been laid out in this book.

The Castor Bean Genome

The Castor Bean Genome

Autor: Chittaranjan Kole , Pablo Rabinowicz

Número de Páginas: 286

This book addresses various aspects of the current castor bean research, including genetics, biotechnology, comparative genomics, and more specific topics such as oil metabolism and the ricin toxin. It also presents the whole genome sequencing of the castor bean and its impact on the mining of gene families and future plant breeding. Castor bean (Ricinus communis), an oilseed plant, belongs to the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family. It is a tropical and subtropical crop valued for the high quality and uniform nature of its oil, which is mostly composed of the uncommon fatty acid ricinoleate. Castor bean oil has important industrial applications for the production of lubricants, cosmetics, medicines, and specialty chemicals, and castor bean has also been proposed as a biodiesel crop that does not pose concerns regarding the “food versus fuel” debate. However, it accumulates the type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein ricin in its seeds, and health concernsposed by ricin’s high toxicity have prevented broader cultivation. Recently, there has been renewed interest in castor bean due to potential biosecurity issues.

Ovarian Aging and Reproduction

Ovarian Aging and Reproduction

Autor: Wenpei Xiang , Yingying Qin , Huai L. Feng , Jing Li

Número de Páginas: 313

The ovary plays a very significant role in aging. The regenerative capacity of stem cells is the key factor to promote healthy aging, and the stem cell viability would decline sharply after the reproductive period, especially in women. Except for stem cell aging and neuroendocrine aging, ovarian aging is also a hotspot in the field of aging research. Recent researches have investigated many factors affecting ovarian function or aging, in terms of gene mutation, epigenetic erosion, endocrine dysfunction and environment-dependent extrinsic factors. This Research Topic aims to explore in detail all the factors related to ovarian aging and female reproduction outcomes. We'll discuss various age-related molecules, such as P16, P21, etc., as well as mutations in premature aging genes, such as FSHR mutations, abnormalities in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, and redox imbalances that contribute to ovarian aging. Also, we are committed to addressing the relationship between female factors and reproductive outcomes. Besides, the discussion also focus on measures to delay ovarian aging, such as antioxidant drugs, mesenchymal stem cell therapy, ovarian tissue engineering exploration,...

Fertilization and Early Embryogenesis: From Research to Clinical Practice

Fertilization and Early Embryogenesis: From Research to Clinical Practice

Autor: Martin Anger , Katerina Komrskova , Jason Knott , Ahmed Balboula , Paolo Rinaudo

Número de Páginas: 177

Early embryo development in mammals begins with the recognition and fusion of gametes of both sexes, followed by a series of mitotic cell divisions. The gamete fusion results in the formation of totipotent cells, which are capable of developing into three basic cell lineages in mammals. These include the trophoblast, surrounding the embryo and facilitating communication with the mother, the epiblast which develops into the fetus, and the primitive endoderm which forms the yolk sac. Until implantation, the embryos undergo remarkable changes, including histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, epigenetic modifications of chromatin, the onset of transcription from the embryonic genome, and the first differentiation to the formation of the trilaminar disc, containing all primary cell lineages required for the formation of fetal tissues and organs. Remarkably, some of the most complex events of early development, such as fertilization, are achieved during complete transcriptional silencing. Another unique feature is how fast the development proceeds. In humans, reaching the stage of early gastrulation takes approximately two weeks.
