Copy of a report, dated April 24, 1683 in San Juan del Monte, near Manila, by Fray Ginés Barrientos, bishop of Troya, to the Spanish king, Charles II, describing church-state conflicts in the islands, abuses of the clergy, and the arrest and exile of Felipe Pardo, archbishop of Manila. Barrientos' detailed report to the king explains the causes and events leading up to the imprisonment and exile of Felipe Pardo, archbishop of Manila, in March 1683, by order of Audiencia judges Diego Calderón y Serrano and Cristóbal Herrera y Grimaldos. Although Pardo named Barrientos acting head of the archdiocese during Pardo's exile, the Audiencia refused to accept the appointment, and declared that in the interim, the ecclesiastical cabildo should govern the archdiocese. Barrientos believes he was rejected because of a sermon he preached during the feast of the Virgen del Rosario, when the Spanish naval victory over the Ottomans is traditionally celebrated, in which he attacked the secular authority of the Audiencia.
