Diversity of Fungi and Fungus-Like Organisms in Tropical Forests

Autor: Steven L. Stephenson , Samantha Chandranath Karunarathna , Changlin Zhao , Arun Kumar Dutta

Número de Páginas: 654

Tropical forests cover approximately 6% of the land surface of the earth and more than 30% of all forested areas on the entire planet. These forests are characterized by a very high level of diversity for the assemblages of organisms present. The overall diversity of tropical forests is higher than that of any other type of terrestrial ecosystem, yet the fungi and fungus-like organisms (basidiomycetes, ascomycetes, myxomycetes, and dictyostelids) associated with tropical forests remain understudied. Diversity of Fungi and Fungus-Like Organisms in Tropical Forests brings together information on these organisms obtained by scientists who are actively carrying out research in every region of the world where tropical forests occur. Among the major subject areas considered are ecology, biogeography, and taxonomy. Furthermore, information is provided on the use of certain fungi as food for humans and the potential of some fungi as sources of products of economic, pharmaceutical, or medical value. This book will be of great interest to students, teachers, and all who wish to learn more about the fungi and fungus-like organisms associated with tropical forests around the world.

Fungi are a relatively understudied group yet an essential, charming, and valuable group of organisms with an implausible biotechnological potential for industrial applications. Around 155,000 out of 2.5 million fungi have been identified and described. The unique characteristics of fungi thus provide great potential for their application in biotechnology and industry. It is unforgettable that fungi have gifted human beings with cyclosporin, lovastatin, penicillin, and other globally essential drugs. Furthermore, fungi can be cultivated with comparative easiness, making production practicable. Exploring novel fungi and maintaining a living fungi collection both have implausible economic potential in finding fungi with industrial uses that lead to novel products. Recently, fungi have received substantial attention for enhancing value in agricultural, industrial, pharmaceutical, and health fields. There have been some highly intriguing advances in using fungi for new processes, products, and solutions that are crucial for the world. Also, fungi are proven to be a prolific pool of structurally varied bioactive metabolites. Additionally, fungal enzymes have been utilized instead of...

Therapeutic Applications of Nano-Cardio-Nutraceuticals in Naturopathic Cardiovascular Care

Número de Páginas: 310

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, necessitating the development of safer, more effective, and holistic therapeutic approaches. In recent years, nutraceuticals derived from natural bioactive compounds have gained considerable attention for their cardioprotective potential in naturopathic healthcare systems. However, conventional nutraceutical formulations often suffer from poor bioavailability, low stability, limited absorption, and inadequate target specificity. The integration of nanotechnology with nutraceutical science has led to the emergence of nano-cardio-nutraceuticals, an advanced therapeutic platform designed to enhance the delivery, efficacy, and therapeutic performance of natural cardiovascular agents. This book chapter explores the therapeutic applications of nano-cardio-nutraceuticals in naturopathic cardiovascular care, emphasizing their role in the prevention, management, and supportive treatment of various cardiovascular disorders including hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, hyperlipidemia, ischemic heart disease, and oxidative stress-induced cardiac dysfunctions. The chapter discusses various ...

The ultimate vision is to identify and develop new, effective therapeutic...

Host-microbiota immuno-interactions for personalized microbial therapeutics, volume II

Autor: Nar Singh Chauhan , Sunil Kumar Raghav , Shashank Gupta

Número de Páginas: 232

Host-microbiota immuno-interactions are fundamental to immune regulation and the development of personalized microbial therapeutics. The human gut microbiota plays a crucial role in shaping the immune system by influencing innate and adaptive immune responses. Microbial communities interact with pattern recognition receptors on host immune cells, recognizing microbial-associated molecular patterns and initiating signaling pathways that modulate immune responses. These interactions help maintain immune homeostasis, balancing tolerance to commensal microbes with the ability to mount dynamic immune response against pathogens. Key immune cells involved in these interactions include regulatory T cells promoting immune tolerance and IgA-producing B cells, which produce secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) to neutralize potential pathogens without triggering inflammation. Certain commensal microbes induce Treg differentiation, helping to maintain gut immune tolerance and prevent immune overreaction. Furthermore, microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), also modulate immune responses by enhancing Treg function and suppressing pro-inflammatory pathways. Dysbiosis, an...
