The Psychology of Skin Bleaching

Autor: Christopher A.d. Charles

Número de Páginas: 168

This book examines the controversial global phenomenon of skin bleaching. It uses a social psychological approach to explain the motivations, behavior, and medical consequences of the practice, considering why some people use products to lighten their complexion. Written by a world-leading expert in skin bleaching, the book takes a nuanced approach to understanding skin bleaching that looks further than the standard claims of low self-esteem, a form of self-hatred. It goes beyond looking at individual personality traits to consider the cultural norms, values, shared social meanings, and practices about race and skin color, showing how shared meanings from social representation guide people’s behavior in their culture. The book draws predominantly on research from Jamaica, but considers how skin bleaching is practised in different cultural contexts across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Chapters consider the history of race and skin color, how skin color and race are portrayed in popular culture, how skin color and race form two of some people’s social identities, and how skin bleaching has become an established social practice in many settings. It also looks at the...

So Much Things to Say

Autor: Kwame Dawes , Colin Channer

Número de Páginas: 225

Robert Pinsky and Derek Walcott anchor this groundbreaking, soulful poetry collection. Imagine a night of a hundred poets reading their work to an audience of intensely engaged, responsive, and lively people—say three thousand of them. They are a loud bunch when it is time to make noise, but they are silent as congregants at prayer when the poets' language entrances them. Imagine the reading taking place under a tent pitched on a grassy lawn that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Imagine that this is not the north coast of Jamaica, with its cliche of white sands and coconut trees, a place glutted with cruise ship passengers and bewildered tourists; imagine instead a rugged coastline, a landscape full of the kind of character we find in the weather-beaten faces of wise old folk; imagine fishermen, farmers, ordinary workers, schoolchildren, and traveling people moving around as if they have been in this place forever and as if they all belong . . . Imagine one hundred poets, some whose names you know and some you have never heard of, stepping onto the stage, opening their mouths and hearts, and singing out poems of great variety, complexity, beauty, and passion . . . Imagine laughter...

Autor: Friederike Börner

Número de Páginas: 21

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, University of Potsdam (Institut fuer Anglistik), course: Postkoloniale Literatur & Kultur, language: English, abstract: In this work I want to provide a brief overview of the literature development in the West Indies, especially in Jamaica. Therefore I will discuss the language and literature situation in Jamaica and talk about the author Mary Seacole as an example for a female Jamaican writer. A part of my work will be that I discuss the role of women and female characters in Jamaican literature. That is why I decided for Mary Seacole’s book “Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands”. At the end of this paper I want to give an outlook of Jamaican literature and the situation of black literature in the Caribbean. The West Indies share the common experience of colonization, displacement, slavery, emancipation and nationalism this particular West Indian experience is part of the West Indian culture and of their arts. Even though slavery was abolished between 100 and 150 years ago, it lives on in the memories of the inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. The ...

Learning Interdependence

Autor: David J. Bachner , Laurence J. Malone , Mary C. Snider

Número de Páginas: 230

This volume asserts that international and intercultural experiences are powerful vehicles for first-year college students to learn the perspectives and skills necessary to function interdependently in a rapidly changing and complex world. This thesis is developed through an in-depth case study of efforts to provide such learning opportunities in a project called the First-Year Intercultural Experience at Hartwick College, a 4-year liberal arts and sciences institution in Oneonta, New York. The focus is on one of the courses, "Europe in Transition," which included an off-campus component in Germany and France. Fifteen first-year students participated. Findings from the case study show the usefulness of working with young undergraduates and the importance of student-centered approaches to learning and teaching. The chapters are: (1) "The Context of Undergraduate Intercultural Education in the 21st Century"; (2) "An Overview of Hartwick College"; (3) "An Administrator's Perspective: The Development of the First-Year Intercultural Experience" (David Bachner); (4) "An Economics Professor's Perspective: Educational and Personal Considerations" (Laurence Malone); (5) "A Foreign Language ...
