Parasitic Diseases

Parasitic Diseases

Autor: Dickson D. Despommier , Robert W. Gwadz , Peter J. Hotez

Número de Páginas: 346

Worldwide, the numbers of people suffering and dying from parasitic diseases are overwhelming, with more than 100 million cases and 1 million deaths each year from malaria alone. Despite the magnitude of the problem and the importance of the parasites that cause opportunistic infections among persons with HIV/AIDS, medical schools in the United States, Canada, and other developed countries consistently reduce the amount of time spent on parasitic diseases in the curricu lum. As a result most medical students receive limited information about these diseases, and are inadequately prepared to diagnose or treat them as physicians. This problem is too large to be resolved within the time available for parasitology in the medical school curriculum; at most, students can be acquainted with the salient features of the medically important parasites. Likewise, the traditional isolation of parasitology from the rest of the curriculum (consistent with its exclu sion from most microbiology texts) is another unresolved problem. In my opinion, this is why most physicians are unable to think about the differential diagnosis of parasitic diseases in the same way that they routinely balance the...

Diagnostic Pathology of Parasitic Infections with Clinical Correlations

Autor: Yezid Gutierrez

Número de Páginas: 810

This book provides a comprehensive reference and diagnostic aid to the practicing pathologist or infectious disease specialist encountering a parasite in an examined tissue sample. Organized by phylogenetic group, the text facilitates diagnosis by discussing common characteristics and patternsof different parasites, and misleading artifacts that resemble parasites in tissue. This second edition includes molecular biology and immunologic aspects, and a more in-depth discussion of syndromes more prevalent due to increased world travel, immigration and the AIDS epidemic.

Medical Parasitology

Medical Parasitology

Autor: Abhay R. Satoskar

Número de Páginas: 318

Infections caused by parasites are still a major global health problem. Although parasitic infections are responsible for a significant morbidity and mortality in the developing countries, they are also prevalent in the developed countries. Early diagnosis and treatment of a parasitic infection is not only critical for preventing morbidity and mortality individually but also for reducing the risk of spread of infection in the community. This concise book gives an overview of critical facts for clinical and laboratory diagnosis, treatment and prevention of parasitic diseases which are common in humans and which are most likely to be encountered in a clinical practice. This book is a perfect companion for primary care physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, medical students, paramedics, other public health care personnel and as well as travelers.

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit

Autor: Charles Feldman , George A. Sarosi

Número de Páginas: 238

In the past, many tropical and parasitic infections were confined to tropical areas of the world located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. However, with the increase in air travel and tourism and the changing patterns of immigration, an increasing number of individuals are coming into contact with these infectious agents and transmission across the world has been enhanced. Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit provides an international perspective on this topic and an overview of those infections that may cause critical illness.

Immune Response to Parasitic Infections

Immune Response to Parasitic Infections

Autor: Emilio Jirillo

Número de Páginas: 196

This book provides an interesting and up-to-date overview of Parasite Immunology in terms of a survival battle between hosts and parasites, describing firstly how parasites interact with different B cell compartments and trigger a vigorous antibody response. An Interesting chapter deals with new insights into immune diagnosis in Trypanosoma cruzi infection, while another chapter on malaria vaccines critically reviews their development since the beginning, examining the basis for failures or successes encountered in clinical trials. Chapters on immunological aspects of amoebiasis, giardiasis, toxoplasmosis and leishmaniasis in humans are written by top researchers in the world working in this field. This book should prove to be of interest to researchers and students wishing to familiarize themselves with the latest developments in this field. Therefore, this book is considered essential for all researchers involved in Infectious Diseases, Parasitology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Vaccine design and discovery.

Parasites of the Colder Climates

Autor: Hannah Akuffo , Inger Ljungstr”m , Ewert Linder , Mats Wahlgren

Número de Páginas: 591

The parasitic load in cold northern climates is widely under-appreciated. Many texts on parasitology concentrate on tropical parasitic infections, so the reader can be forgiven for thinking that parasites are not a problem in the northern part of the world. Parasites of the Colder Climates redresses the balance by focusing on parasites indigenous t

Parasitic Diseases 6th Edition

Autor: Daniel Griffin , Robert Gwadz , Peter Hotez , Charles Knirsch , Dickson Despommier

Número de Páginas: 600

Remarkable achievements in parasitic disease research, both basic and translational, have occurred over the last ten years, and we have incorporated the majority of these into the 6th edition of Parasitic Diseases. We have added over 1,000 new references to document these advances. Innovative work in the laboratory has provided the clinician/research scientist with a much clearer understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis. The number of recently discovered interleukins and their cellular networks has completely re-ordered our comprehension of how parasites and our defense system works to produce protection against infection/reinfection, or in some cases, how it becomes subverted by the offending pathogen to enable it to endure inside us for long periods of time. A plethora of molecular-based diagnostic tests have found their way into the routine of the parasitology diagnostic laboratory, improving the ease at which the offending pathogen can be rapidly identifed. Newer drugs, many with less harmful side-effects than the ones they replaced, have come on the market that make controlling parasite populations at the community level possible without the risk of harming the very...

for the design of control programs; in extreme cases (as dis cussed below, by Fine et al. , this volume, and elsewhere) it can happen that immunization programs, although they protect vaccinated individuals, actually increase the overall incidence of a particular disease. The possibility that many nonhuman animal populations may be regulated by parasitic infections is another topic where it may be argued that conventional disciplinary boundaries have retarded investigation. While much ecological research has been devoted to exploring the extent to which competition or predator-prey interactions may regulate natural populations or set their patterns of geographical distribution, few substan tial studies have considered the possibility that infectious diseases may serve as regulatory agents (1,8). On the other hand, the many careful epidemiological studies of the trans mission and maintenance of parasitic infections in human and other animal populations usually assume the host population density to be set by other considerations, and not dynamically engaged with the disease (see, for example, (1,2)). With all these considerations in mind, the Dahlem Workshop from which this book...

Cases in Human Parasitology

Cases in Human Parasitology

Autor: Judith Stephenson Heelan

Número de Páginas: 260

"Cases in Human Parasitology focuses solely on parasites that adversely affect humans. Intended as a supplement to textbooks in human parasitology for undergraduate and medical school courses, this book of 62 case studies is also an important educational reference source for health care scientists active in the field of parasitology. The first four sections cover different groups of parasites, including intestinal protozoa; blood and tissue protozoa; cestodes, trematodes, and intestinal nematodes; and blood and tissue nematodes. The last section covers challenging cases and details non-parasitic infections in patients with symptoms closely resembling those of parasitic infections. Each case study opens with a patient history and description of symptoms, and most are accompanied by a color image of the parasite described. Thought-provoking questions are posed, covering everything from diagnosis and the life cycle of the identified parasite to epidemiology and prevention. The questions stimulate discussion while emphasizing the relationship of diagnosis to patient care. Cases present new, emerging, and well-known parasites, and parasites infrequently encountered in the United States ...
