The Robie House of Frank Lloyd Wright

Autor: Joseph Connors

Número de Páginas: 100

The Robie House in Chicago is one of the world's most famous houses, a masterpiece from the end of Frank Lloyd Wright's early period and a classic example of the Prairie House. This book is intended as a companion for the visitor to the house, but it also probes beneath the surface to see how the design took shape in the mind of the architect. Wright's own writings, rare working drawings from the period, and previously unpublished photographs of the house in construction help the reader look over the shoulder of the architect at work. Beautiful new photographs of the Robie House and related Wright houses have been specially taken to illustrate the author's points, and a bibliography on Wright is provided.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Oak Park

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Oak Park

Autor: Elaine Harrington , Frank Lloyd Wright

Número de Páginas: 66

It was in his home in Oak Park that Frank Lloyd Wright made his first contributions to the Modern movement. In 1889 he designed the first part of the house, in 1895 he added to it for his wife, Catherine, and their family, and in 1898 for his architectural practice. The entire building was a learning laboratory of modern architecture. While not a Prairie School house, it led to the development of the Prairie School. Wrights constant changes to this complex paralleled the evolution of his early architectural work and career. There, with his young assistants, he rethought the plan, spaces, materials, proportions, and lines of American residential architecture, creating a revolution on the Prairie. His home and studio provided the architectural environment in which to experiment with his ideas in three dimensions. The house featured contemporary art work, oriental tribal rugs, and Japanese decorative arts chosen by Wright and his wife. The studio was decorated with classical plaster sculpture, Teco ceramics and selections from Wrights large collection of Japanese prints. Wright completed the interiors, toned in natures hues, with furniture and built-in furnishings of his own design,...

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright

Autor: Paul Laseau , James Tice

Número de Páginas: 222

Despite the renewed interest in Frank Lloyd Wright and the increasing body of literature that has illuminated his career, the deeper meaning of his architecture continues to be elusive. His own writings are often interesting commentaries but tend not to enlighten us as to his design methodology, and it is difficult to make the connection between his stated philosophy and his actual designs. This book is a refreshing account that evaluates Wright’s contribution on the basis of his architectural form, its animating principle and consequent meaning. Wright’s architecture, not his persona, is the primary focus of this investigation. This study presents a comprehensive overview of Wright’s work in a comparative analytical format. Wright’s major building types have been identified to enable the reader to pursue a more systematic understanding of his work. The conceptual and experiential order of each building group is demonstrated visually with specially developed analytical illustrations. These drawings offer vital insights into Wright’s exploration of form and underscore the connection between form and principle. The implications of Wright’s work for architecture in...

Frank Lloyd Wright on Architecture, Nature, and the Human Spirit

Frank Lloyd Wright on Architecture, Nature, and the Human Spirit

Autor: Frank Lloyd Wright

The architect of the Guggenheim Museum, Fallingwater, the Robie House, and the Johnson Wax Administration Building, Frank Lloyd Wright once said, You do not learn by way of your successes. No one does. Just as he flouted convention in a series of astonishing buildings, so did Wright go against the grain in his career as a writer and lecturer. On subjects as diverse as McCarthyism (he called the senator from Wisconsin a political pervert) and cement blocks, he produced countless lectures and articles, a half-dozen books, and a remarkable series of informal talks delivered to his apprentices on Sunday mornings. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, the author of several collections of Wrights writings and Director of Archives for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, has culled more than two hundred quotations from a wide range of sources, drawing heavily on transcripts of the Sunday talks. The themes to which Wright returned most often serve as the books sections: the value of architecture takes precedence, but topics such as government and the getting of wisdom elicited memorable and pungent comments. Wright was brash, outspoken, funny, irreverent, and unafraid of the most sweeping generalizations. ...

Letters to Architects

Letters to Architects

Autor: Frank Lloyd Wright

Número de Páginas: 238

Letters to Architects presents letters addressed to architects practicing throughout the world, many of them contemporaries with Frank Lloyd Wright during the first half of the twentieth century. Taken as a whole, this selection of letters aims at revealing an underlying unity of purpose: the growth of his work and the unquestionable magnitude of influence it engendered in the world of architecture. The letters are organized into five sections. Section One presents the first publication ever to be made of the letters between Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis H. Sullivan. Section Two traces Wright's concern, through letters addressed to both European and American architects, that his work be understood as the cornerstone of an American Culture. In Section Three, correspondence has been selected to include three specific persons: Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Lewis Mumford, and Howard Myers. These men offered Wright a special forum from which he could speak to the profession as a whole, most particularly through the medium of publication. Section Four narrates, by means of letters to various architects concerned with the assembling and exhibition of the largest one man architectural...

50 Favourite Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright

50 Favourite Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright

Autor: Diane Maddex

Número de Páginas: 128

Houses - not skyscrapers, museums or schools - remained Frank Lloyd Wright's favourite building type from the beginning to the end of his seventy-year career as an architect. When he started his practice near the close of the 19th century, he saw a house as the embodiment of democracy and individual freedom.Your home had more capacity to spread well-being, he said, than any cathedral or palace. To him it was the centre of all family life. As 50 Favourite Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright shows, his ideal home took on an amazing variety of forms. From Wright's 300 house designs that were eventually built, this book visits fifty that have become world-wide favourites. Here, from the young architect's first period, is his own home and studio in Oak Park, Illinois, an architectural laboratory for him over two decades.Wright next ushered in the 20th century with his Prairie House, whose sheltering roofs and horizontal lines linked them to the earth; classics such as the Willits, Dana Thomas and Robie Houses. In the 1920s came revolutionary design in California built of textured concrete, followed in the 1930s by the internationally renowned Fallingwater and Taliesin West. Each of the examples ...

The Natural House

Autor: Frank Lloyd Wright

Número de Páginas: 232

When Frank Lloyd Wright turns his attention to one of the most important personal problems now facing practically everyone in our society - it is a time for rejoicing. The world's greatest architect here meets the urgent problem of suitable shelter for The Family in a democracy, in a magnificent and - as was to be expected - challenging book. Here, presented at last in full detail, is the natural house. The moderate cost houses described in this book and profusely illustrated with 116 photographs, plans and drawings, are houses - of infinite variety for people of limited means - in which living has become for their owners a purposeful new adventure in freedom and dignity. Mr. Wright tells the story of the world famous "Usonian" houses, so that we now see, in text and illustrations, how they have evolved from original conception to final execution. He has also written a step-by-step description of the "Usonion Automatic," explaining just how that remarkable house is built - a simplified method of construction so devised that the owners themselves can build it with great economy and beauty. For this purpose, there are, in addition to Mr. Wright's text, special photographs and...
